Viscosity Measurement according to DIN EN ISO 2555
How is viscosity measured with the ROTAVISC viscometer from IKA according to DIN EN ISO 2555?"Plastics - Resins in the liquid state or as emulsions or dispersions - Determination of apparent viscosity using a single-cylinder rotational viscometer (ISO 2555:2018)"
DEVICE CONFORMITY AND CALIBRATION
The ROTAVISC devices and the associated spindle sets comply with the specifications of the standard and can be used directly.
The maximum viscosity and the accuracy of each spindle at a specific speed are shown directly on the device display. These values can be easily checked in the spindle menu of the device.
The required annual calibration of the device can be achieved by sending the device in for calibration at very attractive fixed price conditions. You can find more information here.
TYPES AND SPINDLE DESIGNATIONS
With single-cylinder rotational viscometers, the measured viscosity depends on the measuring conditions. If comparative measurements are to be carried out, it is important that the measuring conditions always remain the same. The standard defines certain viscometer types and spindle designations, which are transferred to the IKA devices and spindles as such:
| Viscometer type in ISO 2555 |
Viscometer type at IKA |
Spindle name in ISO 2555 |
Spindle name at IKA |
| L | lo-vi | L1...L4 | SP1...SP4 |
| R | me-vi | R1, R2...R7 | SP6, SP7... SP12 |
| H(A) | hi-vi I | R1, R2...R7 | SP6, SP7... SP12 |
| H(B) | hi-vi II | R1, R2...R7 | SP6, SP7... SP12 |
The spindle SP-6 (R1) is the only spindle that is not included in the standard viscometer packages and can be ordered separately if required.
The beaker used to measure the sample can be freely selected. However, in order to achieve comparable results, it is necessary to use a beaker with the same dimensions. This also applies to the spindle type and speed, the sample volume, the use of the protective bracket, the temperature, etc.
In addition, the temperature must be controlled with a measurement uncertainty of +/- 0.2 °C. The use of IKA's DWB 600 beaker with the HRC 2 thermostat enables perfect temperature control and reproduction of the calibrated conditions. This allows the user to perform calibration checks independently.
For more details, see the calibration check procedure video on our website.
CALIBRATION AND MEASUREMENT CONDITIONS
The standard stipulates that the M% value measured by the device and displayed on the screen must be between 45% and 95% and must never be below 20% or above 95%.The viscosity value is calculated automatically and displayed on the screen.
Our calibration test video shows an example of how the ISO 2555 procedure could be carried out, using a silicone oil of known viscosity and paying particular attention to correct handling, as also required by ISO 2555.
Other videos on the website show the proper setup of the device as well as the electronic leveling procedure and zeroing.
FURTHER INFORMATION AND SUPPORT
The ROTAVISC complete packages each contain the appropriate standard spindle set, the protective foot, the temperature sensor, the declaration of conformity and the tripod. Basically a "ready-to-measure package" where only the cup in which you want to measure needs to be defined. If temperature control is required, you can simply add one of the IKA temperature control systems that meet the requirements, tubing and the jacketed 60 ml beaker.
